Conference: 3rd Annual International Conference on Social Sciences

Hosted the Third International Conference on Social Sciences
The “3rd Annual International Conference on Social Sciences,” organized by our faculty for the third time this year, was held on October 26–27, 2017. The conference began with an opening ceremony at 10:00 a.m. on October 26 in our Faculty’s Prof. Dr. Murat DEMİRCİOĞLU Conference Hall.
Following the opening remarks by our Faculty Dean, Prof. Dr. Kenan AYDIN, and our University’s Vice Rector, Prof. Dr. Yücel ŞAHİN, the program continued with a presentation by Prof. Dr. Asaf Savaş AKAT from Bilgi University titled “Globalization, Institutions, and Economics: Observations and Forecasts.”
Unlike our first two conferences, this conference saw participation primarily from countries such as Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan, India, and Oman, rather than from European countries.
The sessions of our conference, held on October 26–27, took place with strong participation from graduate and undergraduate students as well as faculty members.
We would like to extend our special thanks to our Rector, Prof. Bahri Sahin; our Vice Rector, Prof. Dr. Yücel Şahin; the General Manager of the Technology Park, Prof. Dr. Mesut Güner; and the General Manager of Öztiryakiler, Yüksel Yalçın, for their support of our international conference.

Our Faculty Held Its Academic General Assembly Meeting
Our Faculty’s Academic General Assembly was held on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. in the Prof. Dr. A. Murat DEMİRCİOĞLU Conference Hall. The Academic General Assembly, attended by a large number of our university’s Rector, Prof. Dr. Bahri ŞAHİN, Vice Rectors, and faculty members, featured a presentation by our Faculty Dean, Prof. Dr. Kenan AYDIN, on “Strategic Plan and Achievements.”
In his speech, our university’s Rector, Prof. Dr. Bahri ŞAHİN, provided information about the projects he has initiated at the university level and indicated that he was considering assigning the leadership of the Sosyopark Project to our faculty.
Prof. Dr. Bahri ŞAHİN also listened to the concerns of the faculty members and shared his views. He further noted that he intends to meet with faculty members whenever possible to foster healthy communication and facilitate sound decision-making.

Conference: 2nd Annual International Conference on Social Sciences
The “2nd Annual International Conference on Social Sciences,” organized by our Faculty for the second time this year, was held from June 2 to 4, 2016. The conference began on June 2 at 10:00 a.m. with an opening ceremony in our Faculty’s Prof. Dr. Murat DEMİRCİOĞLU Conference Hall.
Following the opening remarks by our Faculty Dean, Prof. Dr. Kenan AYDIN, and our University’s Vice Rector, Prof. Dr. Mesut GÜNER, the program continued with an opening address by Prof. Samuel BOWLES from the Santa Fe Institute.
A total of 105 participants from the United States, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Indonesia, Ethiopia, France, South Africa, Georgia, India, Iran, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, Spain, Norway, Poland, and Turkey, with a total of 91 papers presented in parallel sessions. These papers were presented during 25 different sessions organized throughout the conference. All sessions were held in the conference halls and lecture theaters of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences at Yıldız Technical University’s Davutpaşa Campus.
In addition to participants from the Esenler Municipality and Yıldız Technical University,, as well as guests conducting research in the fields of economics, business administration, political science, and international relations, participated in the conference sessions over the course of three days, both as attendees and presenters.
The conference’s gala dinner was held on the evening of Friday, June 3, 2016, at Otağ-ı Hümayu, one of the historic venues on the Davutpaşa Campus.

John M. Keynes’ General Theory Evaluated on Its 80th Anniversary
At a panel organized by our Faculty’s Department of Economics on May 12, 2016, in the Prof. Dr. Murat Demircioğlu Conference Hall at YTÜ’s Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Prof. Dr. Asaf Savaş Akat, Prof. Dr. Ercan Eren, and Prof. Dr. Erhan Aslanoğlu discussed the criticism John M. Keynes directed in his General Theory, published in 1936, reassessed *The General Theory* on the occasion of its 80th anniversary, given that his criticisms of expansionary economic policies and the liberalization of capital movements have regained significance following the 2008 Financial Crisis.

Our Founding Dean, Prof. Dr. Murat Demircioğlu, Had His Name Bestowed Upon Our Conference Hall.
The B Conference Hall, located in our Faculty’s newly constructed, modern building at the Davutpaşa Campus—which is equipped with every conceivable facility— was officially named in honor of Prof. Dr. A. Murat Demircioğlu, our Faculty’s Founding Dean and a long-serving member of the Board of Trustees and the University Senate.
The ceremony, organized for this purpose, was attended by YTÜ Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Yüksek, Vice Rectors, Deans, Institute Directors, and other members of the Board of Trustees, as well as Şişe Cam Board Chairman Mr. Ersin Özince, former Constitutional Court Member Prof. Dr. Fazıl Sağlam, former THY Board Chairman Cem Kozlu, as well as Board members and senior executives from İş Bankası, Şişe Cam, and Trakya Cam; faculty members from outside the university; members of the press; and YTÜ faculty, staff, and students.
The opening of the “Prof. Dr. A. Murat Demircioğlu Conference Hall” was conducted jointly by YTÜ Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Yüksek, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences Prof. Dr. Kenan Aydın, Prof. Dr. Murat Demircioğlu, and former Dean Prof. Dr. Nurullah Gültekin, and Ersin Özince, former Chairman of the Board of Directors of İş Bankası and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Şişe Cam.
In their speeches at the ceremony, Rector Prof. Dr. İsmail Yüksek noted that he and Prof. Dr. A. Murat Demircioğlu had served on the Board of Directors for seven years and had always benefited from their contributions. Ersin Özince, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Şişecam, emphasized that Demircioğlu had rendered significant services at İş Bankası subsidiaries. Prof. Dr. Nurullah Gültekin, former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, spoke about Demircioğlu’s role in the establishment of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences (İİBF) and his subsequent work. Prof. Dr. Kutay Özaydın, former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, stated that he had never opposed the establishment of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences and had supported it. Prof. Dr. A. Murat Demircioğlu, meanwhile, expressed his deep satisfaction that a hall had been named after him while he was still alive.
Prof. Dr. Kenan Aydın, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, noted that Prof. Dr. A. Murat Demircioğlu had served the university for many years as a member of the University Board of Trustees and a University Senator, as well as in his roles as Director of the Institute of Social Sciences, Founding Dean and Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, and Chair of the Department of Economics and Business Administration.—Director of the Institute of Social Sciences, Founding Dean and Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences (İİBF), and Chair of the Department of Economics and Business Administration—made significant contributions to the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences (İİBF). In his speech, Aydın emphasized the proverb “Merit deserves recognition,” noting the importance of acknowledging the services rendered and stating that, on this occasion, the auditorium had been named after Prof. Dr. A. Murat Demircioğlu.
Prof. Dr. Kenan Aydın, referring to the late Sakıp Sabancı—one of the most influential figures in Turkish business life—noted that Sabancı was constantly driven by an ever-increasing desire to work harder at nearly every opportunity. He once expressed this as follows: “This work is not about making more money. Because even without working, I have enough money to last my grandchildren’s grandchildren. But the desire to succeed drives me to work. I always want to achieve more. It’s like a soccer player wanting to score one more goal, or an artist wanting to create one more work of art.”
This need is the need to be the best one can possibly be. It has no end. This is the need for “self-actualization” described by Maslow in his hierarchy of needs. Rather than diminishing as it is satisfied, it begins to grow. For example, the need for food ends—at least for a while—after a person eats. But self-actualization is not like that. For instance, an athlete who has become the Turkish champion strives to become the European champion and then the world champion, thereby highlighting both the motivation derived from having one’s efforts recognized and the fact that the need for self-actualization is ever-present.

Memorandum of Understanding Between Our University and the Turkish Petroleum Trakya Regional Directorate
On February 12, 2016, a protocol was signed between Yıldız Technical University and the Turkish Petroleum Trakya Regional Directorate regarding the BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION EVENING PROGRAM (NON-THESIS) MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAM. The protocol was signed by our Rector, Prof. Dr. İsmail YÜKSEK, and the Trakya Regional Director of Turkish Petroleum, Murat HACIHALİLOĞLU, at our university’s Rectorate building.
The signing ceremony was attended by our Dean, Prof. Dr. Kenan AYDIN; the Chair of the Department of Business Administration at our Faculty, Prof. Dr. Salil DURER; our Faculty faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emre AKBAŞ; and Sabriye ÇAM and Mustafa AĞIR from TPAO.
The Non-Thesis Master’s Program in Business Administration was launched on February 15, 2016. The inaugural class held to mark the program’s launch was attended by Prof. Dr. Kenan AYDIN, along with faculty members Prof. Dr. Salih DURER, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emre AKBAŞ, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pınar BÜYÜKBALCI.
